The Playoffs Loom as the Academy Rally to Defeat Real Shore, 2-1
July 15, 2007-In a match on the Jersey shore tonight, the Long Island Academy (5-2-3) rallied to defeat Real Shore (0-10-0) to close out their National Premier Soccer League regular season schedule.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Academy received two goals from Player of the Match Juan Melgar. In his tally in the 62nd minute, Karim Diallo received the assist with captain Danny Leon getting the assist on the game-winning goal in the 84th minute. On that play, Melgar dribbled around the goalkeeper
inside the penalty area, then two defenders before scoring on an amazing play.
Academy goalkeeper Billy Gatti made five saves.
The game was much tighter than the last time these two teams met, on June 24 at Mitchel Athletic Complex, when the Academy won, 8-1.
"It was good to finish the regular season with a win," commented Academy head coach Paul Riley. "Our win at Queen City on Friday night was already like a playoff game for us."
The Academy now advance to the NPSL playoffs. Third-place Long Island will be playing at second place Atlantic City Diablos (5-1-4) on a date to be announced.
