Fury Romp While Academy Lose for the First Time Ever
July 6, 2007-The 5-1-2 Long Island Fury scored early and often as they defeated the 5-3-0 Northampton Laurels, 8-0. Even 14-year-old forward Karin Simonian scored a goal for the women's national champions.
Gina DiMartino of Massapequa notched two goals and an assist, Jasmyne Spencer of Bay Shore tallied two goals, Baldwin's Kelly Henderson had a goal and an assist and Farmingdale's Lorraine Quinn, Huntington's Emily Sammis plus Simonian added one goal.
Gina's sister, Christina DiMartino, did not score but she had three assists, including the assists on her sister's two goals. Christina is now leaving for Finland to play with the U.S. Under 21 Women's National Team in the Nordic Cup.
The Fury had a 6-0 halftime lead. Becky Wachsberger (1 save) of East Meadow and Laura Elfers (0 saves) of Deer Park shared the shutout in goal.
In the nightcap, 5-1-1 Queen City FC from Buffalo demonstrated why they are in first place as they took advantage of their chances while the 3-1-3 Long Island Academy twice hit the post. The 2-0 result in favor of Queen City in the back-and-forth match was the Academy's first-ever loss.
City, whose nickname and sky blue uniforms mimic England's Manchester City FC, received goals from Casey Derkacz in the 41st minute and Matt Daum in the 51st. Rudi Costa received the assists for the crosses.
A crowd of 900 watched all the soccer action at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale tonight.
Taking it in also was Nassau County Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Jose Lopez, who commented, "If we're able to take up-and-coming teams like the Fury and Academy and have them play in a Nassau County stadium while we at the county are attempting to bring our recreational facilities to the next level, it can only help both these teams and our county."
Tonight was the last regular season home match for the Fury and the Academy as both squads finish the season on the road. They travel to Massachusetts to take on the Boston Aztecs tomorrow night in a very important doubleheader.
