Academy Defeats NYAC, 4-1, For NY Bragging Rights July 11, 2008-The battle for New York supremacy in the National Premier Soccer League was played tonight across the Hudson River in Frank Sinatra's hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey. Start spreading the news that it was the Long Island Academy which proved it is A-number one, top of the list with a 4-1 defeat of the New York Athletic Club at Stevens Tech. The Academy cliches the Mid-Atlantic Division with an undefeated record of 7-0-2. NYAC drops to 2-4-2. Down 1-0, the Academy bounced back on a Tom Lobben penalty kick midway through the first half after a handball in the penalty area. Long Island's three goals in the second half provided the winning margin. Midfielder Jose Batista scored in the 60th minute, Keith Detelj ten minutes later, then Batista closed out the scoring in the 81st minute on a penalty kick after being tripped near the NYAC goal. "Overall, a very strong performance after being down 1-0," commented Long Island Academy FC Director of Football Paul Riley. "Defender Randy Jean-Baptiste had a strong game, captain Danny Leon again played well in midfield and Shaun Higgins had a good game at forward. We overpowered NYAC in the second half as they kind of ran out of steam." Academy goalkeeper Michael Hurley made six saves. "Michael has played well in goal for us the past two games," Riley concluded. The Academy victory tonight helped erase the memory of a frustrating 0-0 stalemate against NYAC on June 20 in which Long Island dominated play but could not score.
