Academy Tie Diablos in Sweltering Atlantic City June 7, 2008-A long corner kick from the boardwalk in sweltering Atlantic City tonight, the Long Island Fury defeated the Atlantic City Diablos, 3-1, while the Long Island Academy had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Down 1-0 at halftime, three second half goals gave the Fury the victory. Tiffany Yovino scored off an assist from Marie Curtin in the 66th minute, Kelly Farrell fed Leigh Anne Cummings for the winning goal in the 77th minute and Jasmyne Spencer added an unassisted insurance goal in the 89th minute. "A great performance," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We came from behind with a young team which showed a lot of character and was a very good result. The offensive MVP had to be Jasmyne (Spencer) while Hannah Cerrone was the defensive MVP again." Long Island knocked Atlantic City out of the playoffs in 2006 while the Diablos returned the favor, knocking the Fury out last year. For this season, the Fury improve to 4-0-0 while the Diablos drop to 2-1-1. A first half Jose Batista goal off a Gustavo Dias corner kick was all the scoring that the Academy mustered in their match against the Diablos in which Long Island had the territorial advantage. "We did well," commented Academy head coach Adrian Gaitan. "We went for the win and had the better of play. The heat took a lot out of both teams." The Academy are now 3-0-1 while the Diablos are 0-3-2 in the standings.
