Fury Lose and Academy Tie Against Atlantic City
June 1, 2007-Give the devils their due! The Atlantic City Diablos women came to Long Island and defeated the national champion Long Island Fury, 2-1, while the Diablos men played to a scoreless tie with the Long Island Academy.
The Fury (2-1-0) had the better of play but nevertheless had a devil of a time against the Diablos. Long Island's defensive scoreless streak stopped at 555 minutes.
The Diablos' set pieces gave the Fury problems all evening. Atlantic City's Dani Collins scored a header off a corner kick in the 20th minute and Alicia Hall tallied on a header off a free kick in the 90th minute.
Emily Sammis of Huntington scored the Fury's goal in the 50th minute.
The Diablos' keeper Megan Walker made four saves while the Fury's Becky Wachsberger of East Meadow had five saves.
The Academy (1-0-1) and Diablos men ended their game in a 0-0 stalemate. Player of the Match was Academy goalkeeper Billy Gatti of Baldwin, who made six saves, four which were point blank reactions, to somehow preserve the shutout. Diablos' keeper Ned Hunt was not as busy, making one save.
1,000 watched the action at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.
Long Island's next home match will be Friday night, June 15 at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. The Fury take on SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds, coached by Tony DiCicco, at 5:30 pm while the Academy host the Boston Aztecs at 7:45 pm.
