Academy Top the Atlantic City Diablos, 3-2

May 30, 2008-The Long Island Fury defeated the Northampton Laurels from Pennsylvania, 3-1, at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.

A shot from the Fury's Leigh Anne Cummings resulted in a Northampton handball in the 9th minute, leading to a penalty kick. The Fury's Allie Long slotted it home past Northampton keeper Cait Corrigan. The second Fury goal came from a short cross by Katelynn Donovan, kicked in by Kelly Henderson from four yards in the 26th minute. Northampton's only goal of the match came in the 45th minute, a Lauren Calabrese breakaway goal off an assist by Emily LaDuke, beating Fury keeper Becky Wachsberger on the play.

The Fury's Marie Curtin closed out the scoring on a breakaway in the 70th minute off a great assist from Lorraine Quinn. The Fury held a 8-1 corner kick advantage in the match. Long Island is now 2-0-0 while Northampton drops to 1-2-0.

"Our best players tonight were our defenders--Hannah Cerrone, Allie Long and Nicole Choffel. We came out well from the back. A good three points at home," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley.

The Long Island Academy beat the Atlantic City Diablos, 3-2, in the nightcap and gained a bit of revenge for the Diablos knocking them out of the National Premier Soccer League playoffs last year. The Academy improves to 2-0-0 while Atlantic City drops to 0-2-1.

The Academy's Shaun Higgins opened the scoring in the 12th minute off an assist from game MVP Jose Batista. Batista passes in the 21st and 50th minutes led to Gustavo Dias breakaways and goals as Batista finished with three assists on the night.

Atlantic City kept it close with a Matt Frey goal off a volley from 12 yards after a long throw-in by Nick Tramantora. That goal occurred in the 35th minute with Long Island ahead, 2-0.

The Diablos' Roger Kimmer came on the field in the 57th minute and scored three minutes later on a shot that went past Academy keeper Billy Gatti. Getting the assist was Rich Stone off a steal. Give the devils their due as they played with a man disadvantage after keeper Dylan Hastings was sent off in the 36th minute.

"I thought that we were fantastic for the first 25 minutes," commented Academy head coach Adrian Gaitan. "Then we thought the game was easy and we coasted. I cannot be happy that their two goals came off set pieces but we will be happy with the three points."
